Foreign Language Proficiency Exam and Exemptions

Students enrolled in diploma programs taught in a foreign language are required to take the Foreign Language Proficiency Exam administered by YADYO.

The Foreign Language Proficiency Exam is graded out of 100 points, and students who achieve at least the minimum scores specified in Table 1 are exempt from the mandatory foreign language preparatory class and gain direct admission to their registered diploma programs.

Students who meet at least one of the following conditions are exempt from the Foreign Language Proficiency Exam and can directly enroll in their diploma programs:

(a) Those who have completed at least the last three years of their secondary education in secondary schools where the designated foreign language is spoken as the native language and attended by citizens of that country, or those who have completed the International Baccalaureate (IB), ABITUR, or French Baccalaureate Diploma Programs in Turkey.

(b) Those who have obtained at least the minimum score specified in Table 2 from one of the listed exams.

(c) Those who have previously studied in a foreign language preparatory program at another higher education institution and successfully completed their education at B2 (Upper-Intermediate) level or above, obtaining the minimum required score specified in Table 1 out of 100 points.

Placement Exam

Students who do not take the Foreign Language Proficiency Exam or those who fail to achieve the minimum required scores are required to take the Placement Exam.

Based on their scores in the Placement Exam, students are placed in the appropriate level of the foreign language preparatory class.

Students who do not take or are unable to take the Placement Exam start their foreign language preparatory class education at the lowest level.

There is no make-up exam for the Foreign Language Proficiency Exam or the Placement Exam.

Compulsory English Courses for Departments with Turkish as the Language of Instruction

To be exempt from mandatory foreign language courses, students must pass the Exemption Exam conducted by YADYOat the beginning of the fall and spring semesters. Exemption Exams are only administered for courses that cover general English content.

The Exemption Exam is graded out of 100 points, and students who score:

  • 70 points are exempt from the fall semester mandatory foreign language course.
  • 80 points are exempt from both the fall and spring semester mandatory foreign language courses with an "AA" grade.

To be exempt from the mandatory English courses specified in Table 3, students must obtain at least the minimum required scores from the exams listed in the table.

Students who successfully complete the previous mandatory foreign language course with 80 points or higher, or those who have been exempted from the previous mandatory foreign language course with an “AA” grade, are eligible to take the exemption exam for the subsequent mandatory foreign language course.

Students who have successfully completed the foreign language preparatory program at another higher education institution and enrolled in Turkish-medium undergraduate programs are exempt from mandatory English courses equivalent to their completed preparatory program level with an "AA" grade.

Those who have not successfully completed another institution’s foreign language preparatory program must have scored at least 80 out of 100 in the last successfully completed level to be exempt from the relevant mandatory English courses with an "AA" grade.

Students who have previously studied at another higher education institution may be granted exemption from mandatory foreign language courses based on grade equivalency determined by the faculty/school executive board. Exemption procedures are carried out in accordance with the Maltepe University Associate and Undergraduate Education, Teaching, and Examination Regulations.

Foreign Language Preparatory Class Achievement Assessment

The assessment of success in the foreign language preparatory class is conducted annually.

The year-end achievement grade is calculated based on the mid-term exams, quizzes, oral exams, class participation, and other in-term assessments, combined with the final exam grade.

This calculation is performed by multiplying each assessment component by its weight in the final grade and summing the results. The final score is rounded to the nearest whole number.

The weight of in-term assessments and the final exam in the final grade is determined by YADYO and announced to students at the beginning of the academic year.

To successfully complete the preparatory class, students must score at least 50/100 in the final exam.

Students who fail at the end of the academic year are eligible to take the make-up exam. The make-up exam score replaces the final exam score in the overall grade calculation.

Students who achieve the minimum required score specified in Table 1 are considered to have successfully completed the foreign language preparatory class.

Foreign Language Proficiency Exam for Early Completion

Students studying at the B2 level and students in the first semester whose cumulative scores from the assessments announced at the beginning of the academic year meet the following criteria out of 100 points:

  • 90 points or above for A1 level students
  • 80 points or above for A2 level students
  • 70 points or above for B1 level students

are eligible to take the Foreign Language Proficiency Exam at the end of the fall semester.

Students who obtain the minimum scores specified in Table 1 in this exam successfully complete the foreign language preparatory class and gain the right to proceed to their respective faculties in the spring semester.
