About the Programme

Faculty of Medicine is located on the Maltepe University Maltepe Campus. Faculty of Medicine (Eng.) is founded in the 2013-2014 academic year and is continuining undergraduate and training.

 

Our faculty accepts both domestic and foreign students. Domestic applicants are registered according to their scores from a central exam held by the “Assessment, Selection and Placement Centre (ASPC)”. Foreign applicants are admitted in accordance with the “Maltepe University Undergraduate and Graduate Programs for Foreign Students Admission Guidelines”. Accepted foreign students are subjected to English competency exam and those who pass the exam begin to take their 1st year courses in the same year, whereas those who fail begin in the next academic year.

 

Duration of the undergraduate education in the Faculty of Medicine is 6 years (phases). The majority of the programme consists of the compulsory classes during the first, second and third phases. In addition to the compulsory courses, elective courses are also offered to enhance intellectual and social development of students. The fourth, fifth and sixth phases are composed of internship training. Completion of each phase is the prerequisite for the next phase.

 

Maltepe University Faculty of Medicine, founded in 2013, has a dynamic training programme aiming to meet the constantly changing social needs through the technical and medical breakthroughs in the health system. For this purpose, the Faculty of Medicine follows an enriched “Integrated Education System” with interactive presentations techniques, theoretical lessons and practical applications such as laboratory, bed-site training and field studies. Topics in this training process are investigated on the basis of human body systems from simple to complex, cells to systems, normal to disease. The content of the training programme has been prepared by taking into account the National Core Curriculum.

 

In Phase I, basic information is provided to build the students conceptual foundations in normal human biology. Phase I programme involves compulsory courses in basic medical sciences inlucing Anatomy, Biochemistry, Biophysics, Medical Biology, Medical Microbiology as well as elective courses such as, History of Science and Introduction to Microscopy.  

Courses taught in phase II focus on the normal structure and function of the human body in the context of organs and systems. Students learn basic concepts in pharmacology and immunology in the last part of the academic year.

 

In addition to basic medical science courses, students start taking compulsory courses in internal medicine, surgical medical sciences and all clinical branches during the third phase. They acquire knowledge about the formation process of diseases (pathophysiology and pathogenesis) as well as propedeutics for the clinic. They learn about taking medical history (anamnesis) from patients, evaluating the symptoms, performing physical exams, formulating appropriate differential diagnosis, obtaining evidence to support the diagnosis and developing diagnosis and treatment principles, accordingly.

 

Students advance their clinical skills in phase IV by taking Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Pediatrics, Gynecology and Obstetrics, Clinical Pharmacology, Respiratory Diseases and Cardiology clerkships.

 

In phase V, students take Radiology, Anesthesiology and Reanimation, Forensic Medicine, Psychiatry, Orthopedics, Ophthalmology, Otolaryngology, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Dermatology, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Urology, Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology, Clinical Ethics and Elective (Thoracic Surgery / Child Psychiatry) clerkships in a 2-4 weeks period each. Clerkships will take place in the clinics of related departments, primary and secondary health care institutions and organizations.

 

Phase VI is the Family Practice internship period, which is completed in 12 months. In this academic year, learners take internships in Internal Medicine, Gynecology and Obstetrics, Pediatrics, Public Health, Emergency Medicine, Psychiatry, General Surgery and also take the elective courses.

 

Theoretical and practical courses in the first, second and third years take place in the classrooms and laboratories in the Division of Basic Medical Sciences Building located in Marmara Eğitim Köyü. Internships and bed-site trainings will be carried out in the 230-bed, Faculty of Medicine affiliated Research and Application Hospital located in the Maltepe Campus. Students will also conduct field work outside the Faculty in the primary and secondary health care institutions, non-governmental organizations and various public institutions.

Graduates of the Faculty of Medicine can continue their professional lives as general practitioners or they can work in the fields of family medicine and occupational medicine after completing appropriate courses and certification programmes. There are also job opportunites for the graduates in private sector institutions. They can also choose to take the central entrance exam for medical specialty training (TUS) and become specialist physicians. Our faculty also accepts residents for specialty training who pass the central entrance exam. Specialist physicians, who complete their education of specialty in Ministry of Health affiliated Training and Research Hospitals, can continue their careers in their own private practices and also in various private institutions and organizations.  They can also continue their academic careers in medical schools (Assist. Prof., Assoc. Prof., and Prof.).
