About the Programme

Nautical Design is a new technical discipline that emerged at the juncture of architecture, interior design, industrial product design and naval architecture and marine engineering disciplines.

The yacht construction sector, with its ever-expanding global character, involves research and development and entrepreneurship on a large scale. These types of developments provide higher added value as well as significant prestige for mariner countries’ economies. Presently, the yacht construction sector is a multi-specialty field.

The scope and field of activity of yacht design, where styling and interior design play a prominent part, includes all nautical vehicles beside yachts. The expectation of the maritime industry from this programme, which contains an elementary level of engineering knowledge, is to solve problems associated with nautical vehicles, i.e. those with the dominant identity of an architectural and industrial product.

The various objects of this undergraduate programme are: enhancing its educational potential at the national and international level; contributing to the yacht design market; exalting design as a business and occupation, with the advantages of geographical proximity to regions like Tuzla and Yalova in Istanbul where the yacht and ship construction industry is based; contributing to community awareness in maritime and design issues; to gain written/verbal presentation skills; to stimulate academic quality and development on issues like design and nautical vehicles; and channel its alumni toward academic life, post graduate practices and research.

The yacht design department graduates will get the title nautical designer. The programme will undoubtedly contribute to Turkey’s as well as the world’s yacht construction sectors’ professional designer requirements. The yacht design undergraduate programme offers good employment opportunities to its alumni in design establishments specialized in yacht class nautical vehicles, naval architecture establishments, and ateliers and shipyards producing boats of various sizes. Besides, it will provide for them an interdisciplinary academic career opportunity as well. Hence, the alumni’s wide employment opportunities are a very strong aspect of our yacht design programme.

MISSION

Our mission is to train designers and also scientists designing a variety of nautical vehicles especially yachts; having equivalent knowledge to the criteria of national and international architecture, interior architecture and industrial design; being creative, cultural / natural environmentally sensitive, producing and using the modern technology.

And also with the advantages of geographical proximity to the yacht and ship building industry to strengthen of the educational potential; qualified in the field of theory and practise; designing products that being aesthetic, technical, ecological, economic, cultural, historical, social, environmental and other requirements; improving the design profession's reputation, contributing to community awareness in maritime and design issues; to gain written/verbal presentation skills; to stimulate academic quality and development on issues like design and nautical vehicles; and channel its alumni toward academic life, post graduate practices and research.

Our major is the first undergraduate programme of its kind in the world. With its attendant leadership responsibilities, it has the mission of being a reliable scientific instrument, controlling and putting the acquired knowledge into circulation.
