Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Exams

Students take at least one quiz, one mid-term exam (or a project) and a final exam. Students are informed beforehand about the mid-term exam dates and the subjects that the students will be responsible for. The numbers and dates of mid-term exams are announced by the instructor at the beginning of the semester. Mid-terms are given during the pre-determined hours for that course. Excuses of those students who have not taken the mid-term exam or taken part in field studies are evaluated by the instructor, and the procedure is determined by the board of management of the graduate school.

 

In final exams, student’s knowledge and performance in that semester is evaluated. To what extent this exam affects the student’s success is determined by the instructor and is announced at the beginning of the semester. Starting and finishing dates of final exams are determined by senate and can be seen in academic calendar published at the beginning of each semester.

 

Evaluation and Grading

Instructors evaluate each registered student by taking quiz, mid-term exam and final exam results, and the field studies that substitute exams into consideration. As a result of the evaluation, s/he gives one of the grades below as the student's final grade.

AA, BA, BB, CB and CC mean that the course has been completed successfully. DC and DD grades show that the course has been completed successfully providing that the student has fulfilled the cumulative grade point average requirement which is 2,50 for Master students and 3,00 for Ph.D. students. Grade F shows that the student has been unsuccessful; so the course should be retaken.

 

Final grades are given on the basis of normal distribution of scores in the class. However, the letter grades are considered to correspond to the point equivalences given in the table above.

EK   (Incomplete)

In a condition of incompleteness resulting from the student, the instructor takes valid excuses into consideration and asks the student to compensate those imperfections. Providing that the imperfections are not compensated maximum in two weeks after passing grades are announced, the mark of incomplete, changes to an F grade.                       

  

CK  (Dropped)

Student has dropped the course

 

DZ  (Unattended)

Student has not fulfilled attendance requirements. (Absenteeism is regarded as an F grade while the averages are calculated)

 

MU (exempt)

Student has been exempted according to the regulations

 

TK (retaken)

The course has been repeated due to failure

 

IZ  (permitted)

Student is on leave according to the regulations

 

TF (transfer)

Equivalent courses which the student took and succeeded in other higher education institutions, in another institute or in the previous programme and which have been recognized in the current undergraduate transfer programme.

(*) In 2012-13 Academic Year Master Thesis is divided as Master Thesis I and II, each 30 ECTS credits; and Ph.D. Thesis is divided as Ph.D. Thesis I, II, III and IV, each 30 ECTS credits. In the earlier years there were Master Thesis (with same name and same code) given in two terms, each term 30 ECTS credits; and Ph.D. Thesis (with same name and same code)given in four terms, each term 30 ECTS credits.

 

 

Successful Students

Students are regarded as successful according to their Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA). In order to be graduated as successful, students have to have at least 2.50 CGPA in a Master's programme; whereas in order to be successful in Ph.D. programme, students have to have at least 3.00 CGPA.

 

Students who graduate from their departments or complete their programmes with 3.50-3.74 CGPA are qualified as honour students (onur ogrencisi) and with 3.75-4.00 as high honour students (yuksek onur ogrencisi).
